How to troubleshoot programs in Office 2004 for Mac (887298)

This article describes how to troubleshoot an issue that may occur in a program that is included in Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac.

To troubleshoot an issue in an Office 2004 for Mac program, follow these steps:
  1. Move the Microsoft Preferences folder to the desktop.

    To move the folder:
    1. Quit any Office 2004 for Mac program that is running.
    2. In the Finder, open the Hard disk:Users: user name :Library:Preferences folder.
    3. Drag the Microsoft Preferences folder to the desktop near the Trash.
    4. Close all the hard disk windows, and then start the Office 2004 for Mac program.

      Note When you start the program, do not press the SHIFT key and hold it at the same time.
  2. If the issue still occurs, do the following:
    1. Create a new user account on the computer, and then give that user administrative rights.
    2. Log on to the new user account.
    3. Start the Office 2004 program
    4. If the issue still occurs, go to step 3.
    5. If the issue no longer occurs, your user account may be corrupted.

      If you think that your user account is corrupted, you can continue troubleshooting by using the new user account. Contact Apple if you need help with moving your user files to the new account.

  3. Move the Microsoft .plist files to the desktop.

    To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Quit any Office 2004 for Mac programs that are running.
    2. In the Finder, open the Hard disk:Users: user name :Library:Preferences folder.
    3. Drag the following .plist file to the Trash, where Program is the name of the Office 2004 for Mac program that you are troubleshooting:

      com.microsoft. Program.plist

      For example, if you are experiencing an issue with Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, drag the com.microsoft.Word.plist file to the Trash.
    4. Close the hard disk windows, and then start the Office 2004 for Mac program.
    5. If the issue still occurs, go to step 4.
    6. If the issue no longer occurs, the issue is caused by a damaged .plist file.
  4. Remove and then reinstall the program.

    To do this:
    1. Run the Remove Office utility in the Additional Tools:Remove Office folder on the Office 2004 for Mac CD-ROM.
    2. Select only Microsoft Office 2004 from the Results list.
    3. Empty the Trash.

      Note If you receive any error messages when you empty the Trash, repeat this step until you no longer receive any error messages.
    4. Restart the computer.
    5. Perform a drag-and-drop installation of Office 2004 for Mac.
