SYMPTOMS

On Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computers that have the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 Consolidator and Agent Management component (CAM) installed, the OnePoint service may stop and then restart. The OnePoint service may stop and restart more frequently if many MOM agents are installed in your environment. When this problem occurs, the following event appears in the Application log:Event Type: Error

CAUSE

This problem may occur after you install the 830595 hotfix. The 830595 hotfix causes a memory leak on Windows Server 2003-based computers that have the MOM DCAM installed.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next MOM 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Hotfix installation information

Apply this hotfix to each computer that hosts both a MOM CAM and a manually installed MOM agent. To apply this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Create and then share a folder on a computer that your MOM CAM and MOM agent computers can access.
  2. Copy the Q887180.exe file to the new folder.
  3. On each MOM CAM computer, log on by using an account that has administrator user rights.
  4. Connect to the shared folder that you created in step 1, and then run Q887180.exe.

    Note You can run Q887180.exe from Windows Explorer or by using a command prompt.
When you install this hotfix on a MOM CAM server, the hotfix's Setup program starts an agent update task that applies the hotfix to all currently managed servers. When the next Managed Computer scan starts, a list of agent computers that must receive the hotfix appears in the Pending Installation folder in the MOM Administrator console. Follow these steps to start a Managed Computer scan:
  1. Start the MOM Administrator console.
  2. Expand Microsoft Operations Manager (Default), and then expand Configuration.
  3. Right-click Agent Managers, and then click Scan All Managed Computers.
To apply this hotfix to each managed node, approve the pending action on the CAM server. To do this, right-click Pending Installation and then click Approve All Pending Actions.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
