When you try to install a Bluetooth device, the device is not detected on your Windows XP-based computer (886917)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Bluetooth device on your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, Windows XP may not detect the device as expected.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the device requires a passkey before it allows access to Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) information.

WORKAROUND

If your computer does not detect the new Bluetooth device, follow these steps to install the device:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Bthprops.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. If the device that you want to configure appears on the Device tab, click the device, click Remove, and then click Yes.
  3. Verify that your device is set up according to the manufacturer's instructions, click to select the My device is set up and ready to be found check box, and then click Next.
  4. Click the device that you want to install, and then click Next.

    Note If the device that you want to install does not appear, see the documentation for your device to make sure that it is turned on, that it is configured correctly, and that it is discoverable. Then, click Search Again.
  5. Click a passkey option, and then click Next. If the documentation for your device includes a passkey or a personal identification number (PIN), click Use the passkey found in the documentation. Type the passkey or the PIN, and then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the device installation.

Bluetooth devices use the Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) to locate services, such as file transfer or telephony, in other Bluetooth devices. When a Bluetooth device requests a passkey or a PIN before it displays SDP information, wizards such as the Add Printer Wizard, the Bluetooth Personal Area Network Connection Wizard, and the Add Modem Wizard may not detect and install your Bluetooth device as expected.
