You cannot capture video by using the RGB 555 (16bit) setting in Windows Movie Maker on a Windows XP-based computer (886847)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to capture video by using the RGB 555 (16bit) setting in Microsoft Windows Movie Maker on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may experience either of the following symptoms:
  • You receive the following error message:
    The specified video device is not responding. Verify that the device is connected properly and turned on, and then try capturing again.
    When you click OK, Windows Movie Maker stops responding with the following message: Importing files.
  • Windows Movie Maker quits unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you click the RGB 555 (16bit) setting in the Color Space/Compression box in the Video Settings dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a different Color Space/Compression setting in the Video Settings dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows Movie Maker, click Capture from video device.
  2. Select the video device that you are using, and then click Configure.
  3. Click Video Settings.
  4. In the Color Space/Compression box, click a setting other than RGB 555 (16bit).
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. Complete the remaining steps in the Video Capture Wizard.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
