If you send a message from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server, the message may not be delivered, and you may not receive an NDR message (886808)

SYMPTOMS

If you send a message from Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 to Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, the message may not be delivered. Additionally, you may not receive a non-delivery report (NDR) message.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The Exchange Server environment includes a user account that has more than 32 Message Database Encapsulated Format (MDBEF) properties.
  • You create a new message. You attach a message to the new message.
  • The To box, the CC box, or the BCC box in the attached message includes a user account that has more than 32 MDBEF properties.
If you send the new message from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000, the new message will not be delivered regardless of the recipients that are included in the To box, the CC box, or the BCC box of the new message.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
