SYMPTOMS

When a freedoc is forwarded by a public folder rule from its original public folder to another public folder on your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer, the message class changes from IPM.Document to IPM.Note. For example, you may experience this symptom when the following conditions are true:
  • You drag the freedoc to a public folder in Microsoft Outlook.
  • A public folder rule was previously created to forward all items from that public folder to another public folder.
Note A freedoc resides in one of the Exchange folders, but it is not attached to an e-mail message. For example, a Microsoft Office Word document that has been saved directly in the mailbox or in a public folder is a freedoc. Freedocs typically have a message class of IPM.Document.*doc.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer to install this hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and the Microsoft Exchange Event service are automatically restarted during the hotfix installation.

After you install the hotfix, you can add a registry entry if you want to revert to the old behavior where the message class of freedocs is changed to IPM.Note when a freedoc is forwarded by a public folder rule to another public folder. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersPublic

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type Enable Old Forward Method as the entry name, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click Enable Old Forward Method, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type a value of 1, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
