FIX: A program that calls Wininet.dll takes longer than expected to quit (886801)

Also, the program may appear to stop responding (hang) for up to one minute. This problem occurs when you configure Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to use one of the automatic configuration settings to detect a proxy server.RESOLUTIONHotfix informationA supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main - Right-click the registry key that you located in step 2, click New, and then click Key.
- Type FeatureControl, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click FeatureControl, click New, and then click Key.
- Type FEATURE_WAIT_TIME_THREAD_TERMINATE_KB886801, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click FEATURE_WAIT_TIME_THREAD_TERMINATE_KB886801, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type the process name of the program that you want to configure. For example, to configure Internet Explorer, type Iexplore.exe.
- Right-click the process name that you typed in step 8, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 00000001, and then click OK.
- Right-click FEATURE_WAIT_TIME_THREAD_TERMINATE_KB886801, click New, and then click Key.
- Type Settings, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click Settings, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type ThreadTerminateWaitTime, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click ThreadTerminateWaitTime, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 000007d0, and then click OK.
Note You can modify this value to create a longer delay or a shorter delay. - On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, configure Internet Explorer 6 to use a static proxy server. To do this, follow theses steps: - Start Internet Explorer 6.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- Click the Connections tab.
- On the Connections tab, click the dial-up connection or the virtual private network connection that you want to configure, and then click Settings. If you connect to the Internet through a local area network (LAN), click LAN Settings.
- Click to select the Use a proxy server for this connection check box or the Use a proxy server for your LAN check box.
- Type the proxy server address in the Address box, type the port number in the Port box, and then click OK two times.
Note You may also have to click to select the Bypass proxy server for local addresses check box.
