SYMPTOMS

When a user sends an e-mail message, the e-mail message that is received by the recipient contains incorrect e-mail address information in the From box. The sender's e-mail address appears as two distinct addresses. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The organization that the user belongs to is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
  • The sender's display name contains a comma and extended characters.
When the recipient of the message replies, that recipient receives a non-delivery report (NDR) because the From box contains incorrect e-mail address information.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the service pack or the hotfix that is appropriate for the version of Exchange Server that you are running.

After you apply the service pack or the hotfix for Exchange Server 2003 or Exchange 2000 Server, you must add the RFC2047Compliant registry entry to implement the update. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\InternetContent\

  3. Point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  4. Type RFC2047Compliant to name the new value, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click RFC2047Compliant, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
