You may receive an access violation in Cmd.exe or in Command.com when you send command prompt output in Windows XP SP1, in Windows XP SP2, or in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 (886659)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the "greater than" symbol (>) to send command prompt output from a system folder to a text file, or you use the pipe character (|) to send command prompt output from a system folder to another command, you may receive an access violation in Cmd.exe or in Command.com.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and you have a Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.
