A network name resource does not come online in a Windows Server 2003 server cluster (886652)

SYMPTOMS

On a server cluster that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you experience both the following symptoms:

A network name resource does not come online.

Both the following events appear in the System log in Event Viewer:

Type: Error
Source: Cluster Service Clussvc 
Event ID: 1146
Description: The cluster resource monitor died unexpectedly, an attempt will be made to restart it.

Type: Error
Source: Cluster Service Clussvc
Event ID: 1069
Description: Cluster resource'Network Name' in Resource Group 'GroupName' failed.

Additionally, the following error is logged in the Cluster.log: WARN Network Name Enterprise Network Name: Failed to obtain IDirectoryObject pointer to computer account ServerName, status 80005000This logged message provides information about the resource and network name that causes the failure.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
