You receive an error message when you try to make a Terminal Services connection on a remote computer from a Remote Web Workplace console session in Windows Small Business Server 2003 (886624)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, Premium Edition
- Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, Standard Edition
SYMPTOMSIn Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, when you try to make a Terminal Services connection on a remote computer from a Remote Web Workplace console session, you receive the following error message:
The client could not connect. You cannot connect to the console from a console
session of the same computer.
CAUSEThis behavior occurs because the Remote Web Workplace uses an ActiveX control to make the Terminal Services connection. This
ActiveX control always connects to the port forwarder on the Windows Small Business Server computer.
Because the connection attempt is made by the Windows Small Business Server computer, the computer appears to try to connect to itself. Therefore, the connection does not succeed.WORKAROUNDTo work around this behavior, follow these steps to make the Terminal Services connection by using Remote Desktop
Connection (Mstsc.exe): - Click Start, click Run, and then type the following command:
mstsc.exe /v:Remote_ServerName /console Note Replace Remote_ServerName with the name of the remote computer that you want to connect to. - Press ENTER.
Note You can use the Remote Web Workplace to make a Terminal Services connection. However, you must start the session from a computer other than
the Windows Small Business Server computer. STATUS
This behavior is by design.
