FIX: The wrong icon appears when you insert media into a removable media device (886612)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
  • Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000 Concise Edition
  • Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000 Deluxe Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you insert media into a removable media device, the icon may appear as a warning icon in Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 or in the Portable Media Devices (PMD) Control Panel add-in. This problem affects media such as Sony Memory Stick media and Compaq Flash media.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player and the PMD do not load the correct icon from the resource file.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next release that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Windows Media Player 10 and the PMD show slightly different behaviors based on the current state of the removable media device. Windows Media Player 10
  • No media in the device - No icon appears in the devices list in Windows Media Player.
  • Media is inserted in the device - The correct "media inserted" icon appears.
  • Media is removed from the device - No icon appears.
Portable Media Devices
  • No media in the device - A generic "empty" icon appears.
  • Media is inserted in the device - The correct "media inserted" icon appears.
  • Media is removed from the device - The icon disappears. When you open the PMD again, or when you press F5 to update the display, the generic "empty" icon appears.
