The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print a mail merged document that contains a special character in Microsoft Works 7.0, you receive the following error message:
Windows is low on memory. Save your document, and then close other programs before you continue working.
Note This issue also occurs when you view the mail merged document in print preview.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not insert a special character from the Insert menu. Instead, use the font that contains the character that you want to use, and then manually type the special character by using the keyboard. To do this, press ALT, and then type the number for the character.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Use one of the following methods:
    • For Microsoft Windows XP Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map.
    • For Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 2000 Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map.
Note If Character Map is not available, see Microsoft Windows Help for information about how to install a Windows component.
  2. In the Font list, click the font that you want to use, such as Arial.
  3. Click the special character that you want to use. If you do not see the special character that you want, try clicking another font in the Font list.
  4. In the lower-right corner of the Character Map dialog box, make a note of the keystroke commands for the character. For example, for the character ß, you should find Keystroke: ALT+0223.
  5. In your Works 7.0 mail merged document, move the insertion point to the location where you want the special character.
  6. In the Font list, click the font where you found the special character in steps 2 and 3.
  7. Type the keystroke for the character that you want from step 4--for example, hold the ALT key, and then type 0223 (ALT+0223).
