You receive an error message in module Msxml3.dll when you try to start Encarta Reference Library 2002 (886547)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Encarta Reference Library 2002, Encarta Reference Library 2002 does not start. Additionally, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Microsoft Encarta has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:
   Application name  Application version  Module name  Module version  Offset
   ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
   Enc2002.exe       11.0.1013.089        Msxml3.dll   8.20.8730.1     000bfbfc

CAUSE

This issue may occur if another program has interfered with the installation of the Msxml3.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, click Search, and then click All files and folders.
  2. In the All or part of the file name box, type Msxml4.dll, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, and then click Search.

    Note If the file appears in the list of found files, go to step 3. If the file does not appear in the list of found files, go to step 4.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 /u msxml4.dll, and then click OK.

    Note This step removes the association between the Msxml4.dll file and the Regsvr32.exe file. After you complete this step, a program that is installed on your computer may not work correctly.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 msxml3.dll, and then click OK.
