The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 64-Bit Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, 64-Bit Datacenter Edition
SYMPTOMSWhen you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on an IA-64 computer, or when you start a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based IA-64 computer, the computer may stop responding.CAUSEThis issue may occur if Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) code is overwritten by Windows code.
The Windows Server 2003 Operating System loads operating system components in the physical address range from 0x00000000 to 0x0C000000. If this physical memory region contains EFI code or data, it may be overwritten by a component loaded during the Windows startup process and you may experience the issue that is described in Symptoms.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the affected IA-64 computers must allocate the physical memory used by the EFI firmware to an address greater than 0x0C000000.
