How to reclaim disk space on a disk image in Virtual PC for Mac (886367)

To reclaim unused disk space in a VPC disk image, overwrite the unused space on your hard disk with zeros, and then run the VPC Virtual Disk Assistant. To do this, follow these steps.

Part 2: Configure Eraser to make unused disk space available

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type the following, including the quotation marks, and then click OK:

   "c:\program files\eraser\eraser.exe"

2. Click On-Demand, click Edit, point to Preferences, and then click Erasing.
3. Click New.
4. In the Description box, type Zero VPC, and then click Add.
5. Click Pattern.
6. In the Byte 1 box, type 00000000, click Save, and then click OK.
7. Click the Unused Disk Space tab, click Zero VPC, click to clear the Directory Entries check box, click to select the Free Disk Space and Cluster Tip Area check boxes, and then click OK.
8. Click File, and then click New Task.
9. Click Unused space on drive, click Local Disk (C:), click Keep task on the list if you want to run the task again, and then click OK.
10. Click the task that you created in step 9, click Task, click Run, and then click Yes.
11. When the task that you started has finished, click PC, click Shut Down, and then on the menu, click shut down.
12. Click Window, and then click Virtual Disk Assistant.
13. Click Examine or modify existing hard disk image, and then click Next.
14. Click Select a hard disk image attached to a PC, and then click Next.
15. Click the PC and the disk that you want, and then click Next.
16. Click Reclaim zeroed disk image space, and then click Next.
17. Click Reclaim Space.
