Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne	1	RockStar Games, Inc.	When you open the Readme file, the Internet Explorer Information Bar prevents the active content from loading.	Click in the Information Bar, and then click Yes at the security warning. The content will display correctly. This issue does not affect regular game play in any way.
McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004	6	McAfee, Inc.	A blank window appears when you visit the McAfee download Web site.	Open an Internet Explorer window first, and then visit the McAfee download Web site.
Medieval: Total War	1	Activision, Inc.	The activation Help page requires that you accept the Information Bar warning every time that you see it.	With Windows XP SP2, you must accept the Information Bar warning to view local active content as a Web page. This behavior is by design.
Office Excel 2003	2003	Microsoft Corp.	When you use a UNC path to open a PivotChart that is published as a Web page, the page is not displayed correctly. The Apps Help services component provides Help information to you when you run a program with a known compatibility problem. When the program runs, a dialog box is displayed with a brief description of the issue. You can then visit the Web site of the program vendor for an update or for information about resolving the issue.

For client-based or server-based programs that communicate over the Internet or over a network, the Windows Firewall feature in Windows XP SP2 may be blocking unsolicited connections to your computer. (Windows Firewall was formerly known as Internet Connection Firewall.)

Examples of client-based or server-based programs that may experience this issue include the following:

• Multiplayer games that are used over the Internet.
• Instant message programs that are used over the Internet.
• Windows XP SP2-based client programs that receive data from a server.
• Windows XP SP2-based server programs that respond to client requests.

Programs that are affected by the changes in the Remote Procedure Call service

Significant changes have been made to the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service. These changes may cause programs that make anonymous calls to stop working.

Programs that are affected by the changes in Rich Text Format

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a text document format (.rtf) that is sometimes used instead of Plain Text format (.txt) or Microsoft Word format (.doc). Windows XP SP2 disables the RTF converters that were installed with versions of Windows XP that are earlier than Windows XP SP2. If you do not have an RTF converter from an installed program, documents that require this converter will not open.

The following table lists programs that use RTF for Readme and Help files and that may not open when you run the program on a Windows XP SP2-based computer.

The Rich Text Converter has been removed from Windows XP, but most word processing programs provide this functionality. If you have problems with the programs that are listed in the table, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Changes that affect the Windows Firewall Security Warning and networked games

Most multiplayer network games will cause the Windows Firewall Security Warning dialog box to indicate when the game starts or when the game looks for an online game server. The nature of these games may cause the Windows Firewall Security Warning dialog box to open behind the running game window or not to open at all. This scenario may cause you to think that the game has no network connectivity or may cause the game to stop responding or quit unexpectedly.

When Windows Firewall Security Warning dialog box opens behind a game, quit the game, accept the security warning, and then restart the game. You will have to do this only one time as the game will be automatically added to the Windows Firewall exception list.

If the Windows Firewall Security Warning dialog box does not open after you quit the game, you may have to manually add the game to the Windows Firewall exception list.

Additional programs that function differently with Windows XP SP2

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Most of the following programs that were tested in Windows XP SP2 were found to have functional changes that could not be categorized for easy searching. These programs are listed alphabetically by program name in the following table.

Civilization III: Game of the Year Edition	1.29	Atari, Inc.	The program exits to the desktop after it uses fast user switching (FUS) to switch to the second user, to run the game, and to return to first user.	Currently, no solution exists for this issue.
Corel PhotoPaint 9 (German)	9	Corel Corp.	The menu and title bars are missing at startup.	When the program is open, locate the PhotoPaint program on the taskbar, right-click PhotoPaint, and then left-click the Maximize menu choice. The menus should return. Quit the program in the maximized state, and this setting should be maintained.
Dell Solution Center	2.0.58	Dell, Inc.	Links on Dell Solution Center no longer work, and the page cannot display messages.	Currently, no solution exists for this issue.
Diva Starz	1	Mattel, inc.	Sound does not play during the game.	Locate the installation folder for the game, back up the Setupapi.dll file, and then delete the Setupapi.dll file. The game will now run with sound.

To resolve this issue, restart your computer. You might also be able to resolve this issue by right-clicking on an empty part of the desktop, and then left-clicking on Properties. McAfee Parental Controls	1	McAfee, Inc.	After you upgrade to Windows XP SP2, but before you restart your computer, you may receive a message from the McAfee WinSock filter that indicates that changes in your Windows protocols were detected.	To resolve this issue, restart your computer. If you upgraded from Microsoft Windows 2000 to Windows XP, you may have to reinstall the program.
McAfee VirusScan	4.51	McAfee, Inc.	After you install Windows XP SP2, you are prompted to restart your computer. On that first restart, a McAfee splash screen appears.	This behavior is expected and only occurs on the first restart.

In the right column, click to enable dynamically assigned ports for RPC and DCOM. Click to enable Open Ports. Click the Show button, and then click add. Type 135:TCP:* in the text box.

Windows SharePoint Services	All Versions	Microsoft Corp.	A SharePoint site with a hyperlink to an InfoPath file on a local computer does not work.	You must change a registry setting to prompt or to allow to re-enable zone elevation to local files. Enter the desired local path into the address bar. Then, open the registry and locate the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\microsoft\windows\currentversion\internet settings\lockdown_zones\0. Change the DWORD to 1 for Prompt or to 0 for Allow.
Windows SharePoint Services 2.0	2	Microsoft Corp.	When you use the Page Viewer web part in Folder mode, the test link is broken, and the contents of folder are not displayed.	Currently, no solution exists for this issue.
Windows SharePoint Services 2.0	2	Microsoft Corp.	Windows SharePoint Services cannot dismiss the authentication dialog of a shared document folder in Windows Explorer view when the SharePoint site is deployed by using Active Directory account creation mode.	To force use of basic authentication over WebDAV redirector, you have to create a registry key with the DWORD UseBasicAuth under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters. Set the value to 1.
WinGate	5.2.3	Qbik IP Management Limited	When you install the program, Wingate prompts to disable Windows Firewall even though it has already been disabled. You receive the following message: "Internet connection sharing or the Internet Personal Firewall (on Windows XP) is installed. Wingate will not operate correctly if they are running on this computer. You must disable internet Connection Sharing and the Internet Personal Firewall in order to install WinGate."	Disable the Internet Connection Firewall and the Internet Connection Sharing service and restart before you try to install WinGate. This action removes Windows Firewall protection.
Word 2002	2002	Microsoft Corp.	When you use Word to open a document that is stored on a Windows SharePoint Server by using the Web layout view feature.	This feature does not currently work with Windows XP SP2.
Yahoo! Briefcase		Yahoo! Inc.	When you upload invalid file names to the program, it fails, but the progress page remains active.	Browse for files to help avoid entering invalid file names.
