"Not responding" error occurs after surprise removal of Bluetooth device in Windows XP (886249)

SYMPTOMS

You may receive a "Not responding" error message when any one of the following conditions occurs after you use a COM port to connect your Bluetooth wireless device:
  • The power to your Bluetooth device is turned off.
  • The COM port is disconnected.
  • The power to the USB radio is turned off.
  • The USB radio is disconnected.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of the surprise removal of the device.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, wait for approximately one minute to let Windows close the surprise removal condition. This error can be safely ignored.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
