The site server's computer account is not added to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_<xxx> group after you configure a Server Locator Point in Systems Management Server 2003 (886142)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you add the Server Locator Point system role to a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site, the site server's computer account may not be added to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx group. The following entries appear in the SMS\Logs\Sitecomp.log file:
Machine account computer name could not be added to the SQL Access Group computer name\SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx on Machine computer name.

STATMSG: ID=4908 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER" SYS=computer name SITE=xxx PID=1116 TID=804 GMTDATE=Mon May 17 16:37:48.611 2004 ISTR0="computer name" ISTR1="computer name\SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx" ISTR2="computer name" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0
Note In this log entry, computer name is the name of the site server, and xxx is the site code.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • The site server is a primary child site.
  • You configure the Server Locator Point system role properties to use the database on a different primary site. For example, you configure the properties to use the database of the parent site.
The SMS Site Component Manager process tries to add the Server Locator Point computer account to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx group on the database server. However, the component uses the local site code instead of the database server site code.

For example, if your Server Locator Point site code is XXX, and your database server site code is YYY, the SMS Site Component Manager component tries to add the computer account to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_XXX group on the YYY database server. The group on the YYY database server is SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_YYY. This problem occurs because the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_XXX group does not exist on the YYY database server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must manually add the child site's computer account to the SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx group. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
  2. Expand Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
  3. Double-click SMS_SiteSystemToSQLConnection_xxx. (xxx is the SMS site code that is used by the database server.)
  4. Click Add, click Object Types, make sure that the Computers check box is selected, and then click OK.
  5. Type domain\computer name for the Server Locator Point computer, and then click OK two times.
