Site installed by using a local user account does not function in Systems Management Server 2003 (886141)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You install a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site server on a computer while you are logged on to that computer as a local user. Although the SMS 2003 Setup program finishes successfully, you notice the following symptoms:
  • You can start the SMS Administrator Console, but you cannot modify site properties.
  • When you view class security rights on the Security tab of site properties, no domain account is listed with class security rights.
  • The local account that you used to install the site server is not listed as a member of the SMS Admins security group on the SMS Provider. (The SMS Provider is a computer that hosts the SMS 2003 site database).

CAUSE

This problem will occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You use a local user account to log on to a computer.
  • You install SMS 2003 on that computer.
  • The SMS Provider is on a remote computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the computer where you installed the SMS 2003 site server. Use a domain user account that is configured with sufficient rights and permissions to install SMS 2003 components on the computer.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Setup to start the Systems Management Server Setup Wizard.
  3. Click Next two times, and then click Modify or reset the current installation on the Setup Options page. Follow the instructions in the Systems Management Server Setup Wizard to complete the site reset.

Note Local administrator rights are required to install SMS 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

The SMS 2003 Setup program lets you install SMS 2003 on a computer where you used a local user account to log on. However, in this scenario, the site server that you install will not function as expected.

If you plan to extend the schema during the installation of SMS 2003, extend the schema as a separate operation before or after you install SMS. Follow the principle of least permission when you extend the schema. The account that you use to extend the schema must be a member of the Schema Admins group.
