You cannot successfully deploy the Systems Management Server 2003 Advanced Client by using Software Distribution until a user logs on to the client computer (886140)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to deploy a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client by using SMS Software Distribution, the SMS Advanced Client does not install until a user logs on to the SMS client computer.

You notice this problem when you click Run program from Distribution point on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box during the process of deploying the SMS Advanced Client.

Additionally, the Ccmsetup.log file on the client computer may contain the following error message: message:
C:\Winnt\System32\Ccmsetup\Ccmsetup.exe.download Failed to get currently logged on user (80004005).
Download-only process will be executed at next log on Downloading file client.msi File download has not been completed by download-only process.
Waiting for retry. Next retry in 10 minute(s)...


Note The Ccmsetup.log file on the client computer is located in the \Winnt\System32\Ccmsetup folder.

CAUSE

By default, when you use Software Distribution to deploy the SMS Advanced Client, the SMS Advanced Client Setup program (Ccmsetup.exe) requires a network access account to connect to the distribution point.

In this case, a user must log on to the client computer before the SMS Advanced Client Setup program (Ccmsetup.exe) can access the distribution point.

Note This behavior does not occur when you use the Client Push Installation method to deploy the SMS Advanced Client in SMS 2003. This is because the Client Push installation method runs SMS Advanced Client Setup program (Ccmsetup.exe) as a service on the client computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not click Run program from Distribution point on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box during the process of deploying the SMS Advanced Client.

Instead, click Download program from distribution point on the Advanced Client tab of the Advertisement Properties dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. In the SMS Administrator Console, expand Site Database (SiteCode-SiteName), and then click Advertisements.
  3. Right-click the advertisement that you want, and then click Properties.
  4. In the Advertisement Properties dialog box, click the Advanced Client tab, click Download program from distribution point, and then click OK.

When you click Download program from distribution point, the SMS Advanced Client Setup program (Ccmsetup.exe) does not have to contact the distribution point. In this case, the Client.msi file is downloaded to the local cache on the client computer. The Client.msi file is run from that location.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
