An Advanced Client falls back to its assigned management point when it roams to a new site in Systems Management Server 2003 (886112)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When a roaming Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client connects to an SMS 2003 site, it typically queries the Active Directory directory service for a list of sites. If the Advanced Client selects a site that does not have a management point, it falls back to the management point in the assigned site for the Advanced Client.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the roaming Advanced Client uses the following procedure to select a management point:
  1. The roaming Advanced Client queries Active Directory to obtain a list of sites. If the roaming client's assigned site appears in the list, the roaming client ignores the rest of the sites in the list and uses the management point in the assigned site as the resident management point.
  2. When the Advanced Client selects a new site from the list, it uses the default management point for the new site as the resident management point. However, if the new site does not have a management point, the Advanced Client falls back and uses the management point in its assigned site as the resident management point. Additionally, if the Advanced Client roams to a new secondary site, and the secondary site does not contain a proxy management point, the Advanced Client uses the management point in its assigned site as the resident management point.

MORE INFORMATION

A management point may fill any one of the following roles:
  • An assigned management point: the default management point for all Advanced Clients that are assigned to the site where the management point resides.
  • A proxy management point: the management point that resides in a secondary site and that supports Advanced Clients that are assigned to the parent site of the secondary site.
  • A resident management point: a management point that resides in a different site from a roaming Advanced Client, where the Advanced Client roams outside its own site hierarchy. This outside management point becomes the resident management point for the roaming client.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
