A blank screen appears after you upgrade the operating system of a Windows 2000-based client computer to Windows XP (886102)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a Windows 2000-based client computer to Windows XP, and then you log on to the client computer, a blank screen appears.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) Advanced Client installed on a Windows 2000-based computer before you upgrade. Upgrades from Windows 2000 to Windows XP may change access control lists (ACLs) on the system. Then, the CCMRepair tool runs when the computer restarts.

If a user tries to log on when CCMRepair is running, the desktop does not appear until CCMRepair finishes. This may take several minutes. During this delay, a blank screen appears.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 or a later service pack. For information about how to obtain SMS 2003 Service Pack 2, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
