The Smsdbmon.log file and status message 2409 in the Systems Management Server Administrator Console provide different information in SMS 2003 (886093)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you compare the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 DriveLetter:\Sms\Logs\Smsdbmon.Log file and a status message that has an ID of 2409 in the SMS Administrator Console, you find that the status message and the log file provide different information, even though they are both reporting the same task.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the SMS_SQL_MONITOR thread runs the Delete Aged Collected Files task and then generates a status message that has an ID of 2409. The status message contains an incorrect value for the number of folders that are deleted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the Smsdbmon.Log file to verify the number of folders that are deleted by the Delete Aged Collected Files task.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Status message 2409 and the Smsdbmon.Log file are generated by the SMS_SQL_Monitor thread when aged collected files are deleted from the SMS 2003 site database. Status message 2409 may incorrectly state the number of folders that are removed when the SMS_SQL_Monitor thread deletes aged collected files. The Smsdbmon.Log file contains an entry that shows the correct number of folders that are deleted.

The Smsdbmon.Log file entry that shows the correct number of folders that are deleted will appear similar to the following:
CTriggerManager::ExecuteTask - beginning Delete Aged Collected Files process. $$<SMS_SQL_MONITOR><DateTime><ThreadID>
DeleteCollectedFiles deleted NumberOfFiles files. $$<SMS_SQL_MONITOR><DateTime><ThreadID>
DeleteCollectedFiles deleted NumberOfFolders directories. $$<SMS_SQL_MONITOR><DateTime><ThreadID>
