You cannot reset the site database connection to use Windows Authentication for the SQL Server account in the Systems Management Server (SMS) Administrator Console in SMS 2003 (886089)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSAfter you modify Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 site properties to specify a Microsoft SQL Server account, you cannot reset the site database connection to use Windows Authentication. After you try to reset the site properties to use Windows Authentication by entering blank information for the SQL Server account, you receive an error message that is similar to the following: Please enter a SQL Server user name. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the SMS Administrator Console does not provide an interface to configure the SQL Server connection to use Windows Authentication.WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, run a site reset, and then select Windows Authentication for the SQL Server connection. To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Setup.
- Click Next two times. The Setup Options page appears.
- Click Modify or reset the current installation, and then click Next three times.
- On the Authentication mode for SMS Site Database page, click Yes, use Windows Authentication, click Next, and then click Finish to complete the wizard.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.MORE INFORMATIONThe SQL Server account lets SMS services access the SMS site database. Each primary site requires a SQL Server account. The SQL Server account can use either SQL Server Authentication or Windows Authentication.
Note SQL Server Authentication was previously named standard security. Windows Authentication was previously named integrated security.
When you specify SQL Server Authentication, you enter a user account and password to use to connect to a SQL Server database. When you specify Windows Authentication, SMS uses the SMS Service account to access the SQL Server database.
