The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to install a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 distribution point, and during that process, you enable Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) for that distribution point, the installation process may not be completed successfully. Additionally, you receive the following error message in this scenario: Unknown Error After you correct any configuration issues for Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) on the SMS 2003 site server and on the server where you are installing the BITS-enabled distribution point, you try again to install the BITS-enabled distribution point. However, the installation is still not successful, and you continue to receive the error message. CAUSEThis problem occurs if the configuration of IIS is not correct on either the site server or the server where you want to install the BITS-enabled distribution point when you first try to install this distribution point. After this problem occurs, the installation of the BITS-enabled distribution point cannot succeed, even though you have fixed the configuration of IIS both on the site server and on the server where you want to install the BITS-enabled distribution point.WORKAROUNDTo work around this issue, shut down and then restart the SMS 2003 site server. After you restart the SMS 2003 site server, you can successfully install the BITS-enabled distribution point.
Important Do not restart the server that you want to install the BITS-enabled distribution point on. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
