You receive a "Failed to download" error message when you install Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Scan Tools (886060)

SYMPTOMS

You install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Scan Tools.

When you install the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates component of SMS 2003 Scan Tools, and then you click Download in the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates Installation dialog box, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Failed to download
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=9158

Do you want to continue downloading the remaining files?
When you click Yes, you receive error messages that are similar to the following:
Unable to download one or more of the specified file(s). Please try again after verifying your browser settings. Use the "Details..." button to view the bulletin information as another way to verify correct settings.

Resulting error code:87
When you install the Security Update Inventory Tool component of SMS 2003 Scan Tools you notice the following symptoms:
  • When you click Download in the Security Update Inventory Tool Installation dialog box, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
    Failed to download
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23190

    Do you want to continue downloading the remaining files?
    When you click Yes, you receive a message that is similar to the following:Download completed successfully!
  • The folder that you specified as the destination folder does not contain the files that are required to create and distribute the Scan Tools package.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the file path that you specify as the destination path contains a caret character ("^").

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, specify a destination path that does not contain a caret character when you install SMS Scan Tools.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
