A Windows 98-based client may not receive advertisements that are distributed to its user group in Systems Management Server 2003 (886054)

SYMPTOMS

A Microsoft Windows 98-based client may not receive advertisements that are distributed to its user group. When this problem occurs, you see an entry that is similar to the following in the Odpwnt9x.log file on the Windows 98-based client computer:User Group is "(null)"~ The Odpwnt9x.log file is located in the %Windir%\MS\SMS\Logs folder.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the name of the user group has more than 20 characters. Windows 98 clients cannot retrieve the name of a user group when the name has more than 20 characters. Therefore, the clients cannot receive advertisements that are distributed to that user group.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the user account to a user group whose name has less than 20 characters. Then, distribute the advertisement to this user group.
