Client computers that have the SMS 2003 Advanced Client installed are not assigned to the SMS 2003 site, do not receive advertisements, and do not report inventory information to the SMS 2003 site (886032)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You use the Client Push Installation method to install the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client on client computers. These client computers exhibit the following symptoms:
  • The client computers are not assigned to the SMS 2003 site.
  • The client computers do not receive advertisements.
  • The client computers do not report inventory information to the SMS 2003 site.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you do not define one or more management points for the site where you enable the SMS 2003 Advanced Client. When you enable the SMS 2003 Advanced Client for client computers that are on the site, SMS 2003 does not verify that you have defined one or more management points for the site before the SMS 2003 Advanced Client is installed on the client computers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Systems Management Server 2003. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

Management points provide configuration details and advertisements to client computers that have the SMS 2003 Advanced Client installed. Management points also receive inventory, software metering, and client status information. When you enable the SMS 2003 Advanced Client, make sure to define one or more management points for your site.

After you install the latest SMS 2003 service pack, SMS 2003 does not push the SMS 2003 Advanced Client or create client configuration request files (CCRs) unless you define one or more management points for your site.
