Advanced Clients cannot download content from a BITS-enabled distribution point after a site reset or after a site upgrade in Systems Management Server 2003 (886018)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you do a site reset, or after you upgrade a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) site, SMS Advanced Clients cannot download content from a Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enabled distribution point.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the HTTPUrl column in the Pkgstatus table of the site database contains a blank value.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps.

Step 1: Verify every BITS-enabled distribution point server in your site

To verify every BITS-enabled distribution point server in your site, follow these steps:
  1. Verify that you can connect to the BITS-enabled distribution point server. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, type net view \\ServerName, and then press ENTER:
The BITS-enabled distribution point server responds by listing the resources that are shared.
  2. Verify that Internet Information Services is installed and that BITS server extensions are installed. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Log on to a distribution point server by using an account that has administrative rights.
    2. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
    3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    4. In the Windows Component Wizard, click Application Server, and then click Details.
    5. Click Internet Information Services (IIS), and then click Details.
    6. Click to select the following subcomponents of IIS:
      • Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Server Extensions
      • Common Files
      • Internet Information Services Manager
    7. Click World Wide Web Service, click Details, and then click to select World Wide Web Service.
    8. Click OK three times, and then follow the instructions in the Windows Components Wizard to complete the configuration of IIS.
Note You must verify every BITS-enabled distribution point server in your site before you continue this workaround.

Step 2: Create a Resetisapi.trn file in the Drive:\Sms\Inboxes\Distmgr.box folder

Important You must correct any configuration errors that may exist in your site before you continue this workaround. If one or more distribution point servers are not correctly configured, this workaround may not succeed. For additional information about SMS 2003 software distribution, see the "More Information" section.

To create a Resetisapi.trn file in the Drive:\Sms\Inboxes\Distmgr.box folder, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Run a site reset to create a Resetisapi.trn file

To run a site reset to create a Resetisapi.trn file, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, click SMS Setup, and then click Next two times.
  2. Click Modify or reset the current installation, and then click Next.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Systems Management Server Setup Wizard to complete the site reset.

Method 2: Use Notepad.exe to create a Resetisapi.trn file

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
  2. Click File, and then click Save.
  3. In the File name box, type Drive:\Sms\Inboxes\Distmgr.box\Resetisapi.trn.
  4. In the Save as type box, click All Files, and then click Save.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

When the Distribution Manager service finds a Resetisapi.trn file in the Sms\Inboxes\Distmgr.box folder, SMS 2003 reconfigures the virtual directories for BITS-enabled distribution points and updates the HTTPUrl column of the Pkgstatus table in the site database. SMS creates the Resetisapi.trn file when you run a site reset and when you apply an SMS 2003 service pack.

If an error occurs while SMS is updating the Pkgstatus table, SMS may set the HTTPUrl column to a blank value. An error may occur if one or more BITS-enabled distribution point servers are not correctly configured.
