Systems Management Server 2.0 clients can no longer report software inventory after you upgrade the site server to Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (886002)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 site server to SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 2000-based, Windows XP-based, and Windows Server 2003-based computers that have the SMS 2.0 client installed can no longer report a software inventory to the SMS 2003 SP1 site server.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because an SMS 2003 SP1 environment supports Windows 2000-based, Windows XP-based, and Windows Server 2003-based computers that are running the SMS 2.0 client in only a limited manner. Therefore, SMS 2.0 clients cannot submit a software inventory to an SMS 2003 SP1 site server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, update all Windows 2000-based, Windows XP-based, and Windows Server 2003-based computers that are running the SMS 2.0 client to the SMS 2003 Advanced Client.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
