Software distribution status reporting is delayed when the Systems Management Server Status Manager is backlogged with many .svf files (886000)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 or Microsoft SMS 2.0 to distribute software, the software is successfully installed on the SMS clients, but the software distribution status reporting for the SMS clients may be delayed for up to 24 hours.

CAUSE

This problem typically occurs when the SMS Status Manager becomes backlogged with many .svf files that require processing. The .svf files are used to generate .sql files that are put in the SMS\inboxes\statmgr\retry folder on the SMS 2003 site server.

When this problem occurs, the .sql files remain in the retry folder and are not processed until all the incoming .svf files are entered into the .sql transaction files. In this case, the SMS software distribution status message may not be entered in the SMS site database, and software distribution status reporting may be delayed.
