You may experience home folder permissions problems when you use Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services in an environment that includes Windows NT 4 computers (885923)

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services in an environment that includes Microsoft Windows NT 4-based computers, you may experience the following problems:
  • When you configure the Windows Server 2003 TS User Home Directory Group Policy object (GPO) to use a mapped folder on a Windows NT 4-based computer, Terminal Services users may receive the following error message when they try to access their home folder:
    Access Denied
    .
  • When you configure the Windows Server 2003 TS User Home Directory GPO to use a mapped folder on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may not be able to view the Security tab on the Properties dialog box of the mapped folder if you try to view the dialog box from a Windows NT 4-based computer. You may receive the following error message when this problem occurs:
    Invalid parameter
Note To view the TS User Home Directory GPO, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK to start Group Policy Object Editor.
  2. Under Local Computer Policy, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then expand Terminal Services.
  3. In the right pane under Setting, double-click TS User Home Directory

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem in the way that Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services creates the security descriptor of the home directory.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
