How to discover computers in a disjointed namespace environment

To discover computers in a disjointed namespace environment, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
  2. In the MOM 2005 Administrator console, expand Microsoft Operations Manager (name of the MOM 2005 Management server), and then expand Computers.
  3. Right-click Computer Discovery Rules, and then click Create Computer Discovery Rule.
  4. In the Create Computer Discovery Rule dialog box, click Include next to Rule Type. In the Domain name box, you can type the NetBIOS name of the domain or you can leave the Domain name box blank. In the Computer name box, you must type the NetBIOS name of the computer that you want to discover.
  5. Click the selection that you want in the Computer Type box and the Initial Management Mode box, and then click OK.
  6. Right-click Computer Discovery Rules, and then click Run Computer discovery Now.

How to install or remove the MOM 2005 agent in a disjointed namespace environment

To use the Install/Uninstall Agents Wizard in MOM 2005 to install or remove the MOM 2005 agent in a disjointed namespace environment, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
  2. In the MOM 2005 Administrator console, expand Microsoft Operations Manager (name of the MOM 2005 Management server), and then click Administration.
  3. Under Details, click Install/Uninstall Agents Wizard. If you have more than one MOM Management Server in the management group, the Select Management Server page appears. Click a Management Server in the list of Management Servers, and then click Next.
  4. If you have previously installed agents on the Management Server that you selected, the Install or Uninstall Agents page appears. Leave the Install Agents option selected, and then click Next.
  5. On the Method for Discovering Computers and Installing Agents page, click Browse for or type in specific computer names.
  6. On the Computer Names page, type the name of the computer or computers that you want to discover. You can use the domain name\computer name format or the NetBIOS format.
  7. Complete the Install/Uninstall Agents Wizard.
Note The following features are not available in a disjointed DNS namespace environment:
  • Mutual authentication.
  • If you use the Push Installation method to deploy the MOM 2005 agent, you cannot use the Browse button on the Method for Discovering Computers and Installing Agents page of the Install/Uninstall Agents Wizard.
  • You cannot use the DNS FQDN of a computer name when you use the Push Installation method to install the MOM 2005 agent.
