The PlaceWare menu does not appear in PowerPoint 2003 after you install the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint (885504)

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint, the PlaceWare menu does not appear in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003.

Note If you remove the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint, restart your computer, and then reinstall the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint, the PlaceWare menu still does not appear in PowerPoint 2003.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if there is a problem loading or initializing the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint when you start PowerPoint 2003. PowerPoint 2003 marks the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint as a disabled item, and it does not load the add-in.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps. After each step, check to see if the issue is resolved. If the issue still occurs, continue troubleshooting with the next step:
  1. Use the repair feature in PowerPoint 2003 to repair the Live Meeting Add-in for PowerPoint. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Help menu in PowerPoint 2003, click Detect and Repair.
    2. Click Start.

      Note To restore program shortcuts to the Start menu, verify that the Restore my shortcuts while repairing check box is selected.

  2. Remove the PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint and then reset the menu and toolbar usage data in PowerPoint 2003. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Click PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint, and then click Change/Remove.
    4. Click OK when you are prompted to remove the PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint.
    5. Start PowerPoint 2003.
    6. On the View menu in PowerPoint 2003, point to Toolbars, and then click Customize.
    7. Click the Options tab, and then click Reset menu and toolbar usage data.
    8. Click Yes when you are prompted that this will delete the record of the commands and restore the default set of visible commands to the menus and toolbars.
    9. Click Close to close the Customize dialog box.
    10. Reinstall the PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint.
  3. Rename the .pip file and force a new configuration for the PowerPoint 2003 menus. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Click PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint, and then click Change/Remove.
    4. Click OK when you are prompted to remove the PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint.
    5. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
    6. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Office folder.
    7. Right-click the PowerP11.pip file, and then click Rename.
    8. Rename the .psp file to PowerP11.old, and then press ENTER.
    9. Note When you rename the PowerP11.pip file, Microsoft PowerPoint tries to reconfigure itself with the Microsoft Windows Installer program, and you may receive the following message:The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.

      Insert the 'Microsoft Office 2003' disk, and click OK. If you click OK and do not insert the Office CD-ROM, you receive the following error message:
      The path 'Microsoft Office 2003 Professional' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'PROPLUS.MSI' in a folder from which you can install the product Microsoft Office 2003 Professional.
      To let the Microsoft Office program correctly configure itself, put the Office CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK after you receive the error message. Click OK in the dialog box that is requesting the Office CD, and then click OK again.
    10. Reinstall the PlaceWare Add-in for PowerPoint.
