System event ID 11 is logged when you cancel an I/O operation to a raw USB 2.0-attached hard disk drive in Windows 2000 Server SP4 (885352)

SYMPTOMS

You are performing an I/O operation to a raw hard disk drive that is using a USB 2.0 port. The raw disk drive is connected to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4. When you cancel the operation, an event ID 11 entry is logged in the System log of Event Viewer that is similar to the following:

For example, the error is logged if you use a benchmarking tool, such as Iometer, to perform an I/O operation that tests a USB 2.0 hard disk drive that has no partitions, and then you cancel the operation.

CAUSE

The System log error occurs because, when an I/O request packet (IRP) is correctly canceled, the Usbstor.sys driver cannot translate the cancel operation to a SCSI error, and therefore the operation is marked as an error. The error is not valid, because no data destined for the hard disk drive is lost, and there is no device error.
