User connected to Terminal Services must press the SHIFT key two times to turn off Caps Lock (885350)

SYMPTOMS

After you set the To turn off Caps Lock option to Press the SHIFT key on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running Terminal Services or a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is running Terminal Services, when a user connects to Terminal Services on a client computer, they must press the SHIFT key two times to turn off the CAPS LOCK key.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the client computer that connects to Terminal Services also has the To turn off Caps Lock option set to Press the SHIFT key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, change the To turn off Caps Lock option in Advanced Key Settings to Press the CAPS LOCK key on your Terminal Server.

Windows Server 2003

To change the To turn off Caps Lock option on your Windows Server 2003-based computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Regional and Language Options.
  2. On the Languages tab, click Details.
  3. On the Settings tab, click Key Settings.
  4. In the To turn off Caps Lock section, click Press the CAPS LOCK key, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK two more times.

Windows 2000 Server

To change the To turn off Caps Lock option on your Windows 2000 Server-based computer, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings , and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Keyboard, and then click the Input Locales tab.
  3. In the To turn off Caps Lock section, click Press CAPS LOCK key, and then click OK.
  4. Close Control Panel.

You can view the registry key to see if the To turn off Caps Lock option is set to Press the SHIFT key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout

  3. Click Keyboard Layout.
  4. In the right pane, find the Attribute entry. If the Attribute entry has a value of 0x00010000, the To turn off Caps Lock option is set to Press the SHIFT key.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
