A program that calls the DhcpRequestParams function may not work correctly on your Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer (885270)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2

SYMPTOMS

On your Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer, a program that calls the DhcpRequestParams function with the DHCPCAPI_REQUEST_PERSISTENT flag set may not work correctly.

The DhcpRequestParams function may return error code 87, and you may receive the following error message:
ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER

The parameter is incorrect.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because in Windows XP SP2, the DhcpRequestParams function does not work correctly for persistent requests when either of the following conditions is true:
  • You specify vendor-specific options or you use a non-standard option number on your Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server.

Note A non-standard option number is also referred to as a "site-specific" option number.
  • The requested DHCP option is not configured on the DHCP server.
In these scenarios, the correct function parameters are changed and then are rejected as incorrect.
