"NVidia AGP Filter is not compatible with Windows XP" error message when you try to upgrade to Windows XP Professional (885183)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Professional from Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, the Windows XP Professional Setup program quits unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
NVidia AGP Filter is not compatible with Windows XP

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Cancel Windows XP Professional Setup to revert to your Windows XP Home Edition installation.
  2. Click Start, and then click Search.
  3. Click All Files and Folders.
  4. In the All or part of the file name box, type nv_agp.sys.
  5. In the Look in box, click your hard disk drive. For example, click Local Disk (C:).
  6. Click Search.
  7. Right-click the file that was found, and then click Rename.
  8. Type nv_agp.old and then press ENTER.
  9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for any additional copies of the file that were found.

    The Nv_agp.sys file may be located in the following folders on your local hard disk drive:
    • C:\HP\Drivers\Video
    • C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
  10. On the File menu, click Close to quit Search Results.
  11. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  12. Locate the following subkey in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NV_AGP
  13. Right-click NV_AGP, and then click Delete.
  14. Click Yes to confirm the deletion of the NV_AGP subkey.
  15. Quit Registry Editor.
  16. Restart your computer.
  17. Start Windows XP Professional Setup.
  18. When you are prompted for the location of the Nv_agp.sys file, follow these steps:
    1. Press SHIFT+F10 to open a Command Prompt window.
    2. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:

      cd %systemroot%\system32\drivers

    3. Type the following, and then press ENTER:

      rename nv_agp.old nv_agp.sys

    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
    5. In Windows XP Professional Setup, click Browse to locate the Nv_agp.sys file, and then continue Setup.
