The text "Network Drive" may appear next to the drive icon instead of the information about the shared folder in Windows Explorer in Windows 2000 (885118)

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, you run a program that maps a network drive. When you view the network drive in Windows Explorer, the name of the shared folder and the name of the computer where the shared folder resides do not appear next to the drive icon. The text "Network Drive" appears there instead.

Typically, a drive icon appears in Windows Explorer when you map a network drive. Next to the icon, a description appears that is similar to the following:

Folder_Name on 'Computer_Name' (Drive_Letter:)

Note This issue does not occur on computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP or a later version of Windows.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the program that maps the network drive runs under the credentials of a user other than the user who is currently logged on. For example, this issue may occur if the program uses the runas command to log on with different credentials.

When a program maps a network drive on a Windows 2000-based computer, an interactive console session holds the network drive information. When the user who ran the program logs off, the network drive information is deleted. However, on a computer that is running Windows XP or a later version of Windows, a locally unique identifier holds the network drive information.
