The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Project Server 2003
  • Microsoft Project Professional 2002

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to configure Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 so that users who have Microsoft Project Professional 2002 can connect to Project Server 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

To allow Project Professional 2002 users to connect to Project Server 2003, you assign Allow access to the user for the "Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002" permission. The "Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002" permission is a global permission that allows users who are running Project Professional 2002 to connect to the Project Server 2003 database.

A global permission exists for the following:
  • For each activity or interaction with Project Server 2003 data
  • For a Web page or group of Web pages in Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003
Generally, global permissions map either to a Web page in Project Web Access 2003 or to a feature in Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003. Assign the "Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002" permission to members of your organization who use Project Professional 2002 and who have to connect to the Project Server 2003 database.

Project Professional 2002 users who are allowed to connect to Project Server 2003 can use only the features that are included in Project Professional 2002. New features that are included in Project 2003 are not available to the Project Professional 2002 users. The Project 2003 features that are not available to Project Professional 2002 users who are allowed to connect to Project Server 2003 include the following:
  • The Risks command on the Collaborate menu.
  • The Save command in the Save to Project Server dialog box when you save an administrative project.
  • The Delete command in the Open from Microsoft Project Server dialog box.
  • Managed timesheet options and Actual Work Protected options.
  • Enterprise Resource Multi-Value Outline Codes in project plans.
  • The proposal of resources to project assignments.
The "Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002" permission requires that users are assigned the same set of category and global permissions that your organization would otherwise assign to Project Professional 2003 users.

To allow users who have Project Professional 2002 to connect to Project Server 2003, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to Project Web Access 2003 by using a user account that is a member of the Administrator group.
  2. Click Admin.
  3. Click Manage Users and Groups.
  4. On the Users page, click Show grid.
  5. Click the user whom you want to modify, and then click Modify User.
  6. On the Modify User page, expand Global Permissions: Set user's global permission.
  7. Click to select the Allow check box that is next to the Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002 permission.

If the user belongs to a group where the Deny check box is selected for the Connect to Project Server using Microsoft Project 2002 permission, Deny access overrides Allow access.
  8. Click Save Changes.
  9. Repeat step 5 through step 8 for each user who you want to allow.
