The "Available columns" list is empty in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in after you install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003 (885010)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003
SYMPTOMSAssume the following scenario: You install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. Then, when you open the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, the Available columns list in the Add/Remove Columns dialog box is empty. CAUSEThis issue occurs because, when Office Live Communication Server is installed, the Live Communication Address column is added to the extraColumns attribute of the following object in the Active Directory directory service:
CN=organizationalUnit-Display,CN=409,CN=DisplaySpecifiers,CN=Configuration,DC=Your_Domain,DC=com
When you view the Add/Remove Columns dialog box for any object in Active Directory, Active Directory verifies whether the extraColumns attribute of that object contains any values. Values in the extraColumns attribute of that object are used to populate the Available columns list.
By default, the extraColumns attribute is empty, and therefore the default-Display object is used to populate the Available columns list.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, use the Ldp.exe utility to copy the extraColumns attributes from the default-Display container to the organizationalUnit-Display container. To do this, follow these steps: - Install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools if this feature is not installed on your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into your computer's CD drive or DVD drive.
- Click Start, click Run, and then click Browse.
- Locate the following folder on the CD-ROM:
- In the Files of Type list, click All Files.
- Click SUPTOOLS.MSI, click Open, and then click OK.
- Follow the directions in the Windows Support Tools Setup Wizard.
- Click Start, click Run, type ldp, and then click OK.
- On the Connection menu, click Connect. If you are logged on to a domain controller, click OK. If you are logged on to another server or workstation, type the IP address of an applicable domain controller in the Server box, and then click OK.
- On the Connection menu, click Bind.
- In the Bind dialog box, click OK. The bind authenticates as Null.
- On the View menu, click Tree.
- In the BaseDN list, click CN=Configuration,DC=Your_Domain,DC=Root, and then click OK. If BaseDN is a box instead of a list, type CN=Configuration,DC=Your_Domain,DC=Root in the BaseDN box, and then click OK.
- In the left pane, expand Configuration, and then double-click CN=DisplaySpecifiers.
- Double-click CN=409.
- Press CTRL+N to clear the right pane.
- Double-click CN=default-Display.
- In the right pane, copy the extraColumns attributes. To do this, follow these steps:
- Drag the pointer to select the extraColumns attributes text.
- Right-click the selected text, and then click Copy.
- In the left pane, right-click CN=organizationalUnit-Display, and then click Modify.
- Under Edit Entry, type
Extracolumns in the Attribute box.
- In the Values box, paste the extraColumns attributes that you copied in step 12b. To do this, right-click the Values box, and then click Paste.
- Click Enter.
- Click to select the Extended check box, click Run, and then click Close.
- Double-click CN=organizationalUnit-Display, and then verify that the new extraColumns attributes
are listed in the right pane.
Note A space may be added to the attributes list when you complete this process. You can use the Adsiedit.msc
utility to verify the attributes and to delete this space. To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type Adsiedit.msc, and then click OK.
- Expand Configuration, expand CN=Configuration, expand CN=DisplaySpecifiers, and then click CN=409.
- In the right pane, double-click CN=organizationalUnit-Display.
- In the Attribute list, click extraColumns, and then click Edit.
- In the Values list, click the space if a space exists, and then click Remove.
- Verify that all the other extraColumns attributes are listed.
