You receive an "An unknown user profile error has occurred" error message when you modify a user profile in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (884997)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2003, when you modify a user profile on the Edit User Profile page and then click Save and Close to save your changes, you receive the following error message:
An unknown user profile error has occurred. Try recreating this user profile or updating this user profile from the directory service to resolve this problem.
Additionally, an error message that is similar to the following may be logged in the WWW Worker Process log file (SPS_xxxxxxxx_W3wp.log) on the server:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: XML stored procedures are not supported in fibers mode.
When you search the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site, a blank page is returned in the Results field.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the Use Windows NT fibers option is enabled in Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn off the Use Windows NT fibers option in SQL Server Enterprise Manager. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start SQL Server Enterprise Manager.
  2. Expand the server group, right-click the server, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Processor tab.
  4. Under Processor control, click to clear the Use Windows NT fibers check box, and then click OK.

    Note You must stop and then restart the instance of SQL Server before the changes take effect. Click Yes when you are prompted to stop and then restart the instance of SQL Server.
