BUG: Active document menu items do not work when you click the double chevron (>>) on the menu bar in Internet Explorer (884932)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Programming) 6.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer (Programming) 6 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

When an active document such as a Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel document is contained in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the document may display its custom menu in the Internet Explorer menu bar as a merged menu. If the menu bar is partly covered by another toolbar band or if the window is resized to be smaller than the length of the menu, the menu will display a double chevron (»). If you click the double chevron, a drop-down menu of the rest of the options that are on the menu bar appears. However, clicking any menu items from this drop-down menu that are added by the active document does not work. The Internet Explorer menu options will still work correctly.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do not cover up the menu items in Internet Explorer with a toolbar or do not resize Internet Explorer to be smaller than the length of the menu. This prevents the appearance of the double chevron.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Open a Word or Excel document in Internet Explorer so that it opens as a contained document. Notice that the menu for the Internet Explorer window is now the Word or Excel menu that is merged with the original Internet Explorer menu.
  3. Unlock the toolbars if you have to. To do this, right-click the toolbar, and then click to clear Lock the Toolbars.
  4. Use one of the following methods to make the double chevron appear:
    • Drag one of the Internet Explorer toolbars over the menu bar so that it overlaps some of the menu options and the double chevron appears.
    • Resize the window so that some of the toolbar items are off the screen. This behavior forces the double chevron to appear.
  5. Click the double chevron. The drop-down menu options that are covered by the toolbar appear.
  6. Click one of the options that are on the drop-down menu that was added by the active document. For example, point to Format, and then click Font.

The command will not be executed.
