FIX: On multiple-processor computers, garbage collection takes longer than expected in the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (884895)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

SYMPTOMS

On a multiple-processor computer that has the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed, you may notice that the garbage collection operation takes longer than expected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when heaps become imbalanced. On multiple-processor computers, one heap is created for each processor. The heaps are imbalanced if there is a large difference in the number of objects from one heap to another heap. When the heaps are imbalanced, garbage collection takes longer to be completed.

Garbage collection is performed by multiple threads. However, garbage collection is a lock-step process, and the total time that it takes to complete the whole process is the time that is taken by the slowest thread to be completed.
