You receive an "An attempt to connect to 'BizTalkMgmtDB' failed" error message in the event log after you use the Health and Activity Tracking tool in BizTalk Server 2004 (884628)

SYMPTOMS

After you use the Health and Activity Tracking (HAT) tool in Microsoft BizTalk Server 2004, you may receive the following error message in the BizTalk Server event log:

Description: An attempt to connect to "BizTalkMgmtDb" SQL Server database on server "YourServerName" failed with error: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'."

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you log on to a BizTalk Server-based server by using an anonymous user account and then you run a query in the HAT tool.

In this scenario, the HAT tool uses Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) to access the BizTalk Management Database (BizTalkMgmtDB) by using the anonymous user account permissions that were used to log on to the local computer. If the user account does not have permissions to access the BizTalkMgmtDB database, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

Note This problem only occurs when BizTalk Server 2004 is installed on a computer that has Microsoft Windows 2000 installed.

Note Although you may receive an error message in the event log, this behavior does not cause any problems with the operation of either BizTalk Server 2004 or Windows.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Log on by using an account with the appropriate permissions to the BizTalkMgmtDB database. Then, run the query in the HAT tool.
  • Install BizTalk Server 2004 on a computer that has either Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 or a later version installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
