STOP 0x7B error occurs after you start a Windows 2000-based computer that was deployed by using Sysprep (884574)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

After you start a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that was deployed by using the Microsoft Windows 2000 System Preparation (Sysprep) Utility, you receive a STOP 0x7B error.

In particular, you receive the STOP 0x7B error after you follow these steps:
  1. You create an image of Windows 2000 by using the version of Sysprep that is included with the release version of Windows 2000. You include drivers for a SCSIPort device that uses a Lower Filter registry value.
  2. You run Sysprep again on the image. This time, you include updated drivers for the same SCSIPort device that does not use a Lower Filter registry value.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Lower Filter registry values are assigned to all the SCSIPort entries in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CriticalDeviceDatabase

Windows 2000 tries to load the drivers that are defined in the Lower Filter registry entry, although the new SCSIPort device drivers do not support this functionality. Therefore, you receive a STOP 0x7B error.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, rebuild the image by using the version of Sysprep that is included in this hotfix.
