Locale-dependent routines that are used in C programs may use a locale that is different from what is expected in Windows 2000 (884536)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you run C programs that use any locale-dependent routines in Microsoft Windows 2000, the locale-dependent routines may use the user locale instead of the locale that you expect to be used. You are not informed that the locale has been changed.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you run a program that calls any one of the Win32 performance data helper (PDH) functions. The PDH functions may change the locale when entering but the PDH functions may not restore the original locale when exiting.

For example, if your program calls the PdhEnumObjectItems PDH function, the C runtime library locale may be changed from the default C locale to the operating system user locale. After the PDH call has been made, all C runtime locale-dependent routines use the user locale. This may not be the locale that you expect the C locale-dependent routines to use.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
