FIX: You receive a "Page cannot be displayed" error message in Internet Explorer when you click a hyperlink to view a Microsoft Office document (884534)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using a direct connection to a security-enhanced Web site, if you click a hyperlink to view a Microsoft Office document, you may receive the following error message in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
Page cannot be displayed

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. Registry information

You must modify the registry to use this hotfixes.

After you apply this hotfix, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

  3. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 2, click New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FeatureControl for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click the FeatureControl subkey, click New, and then click Key.
  6. Type FEATURE_AUTO_REFRESH_ON_NON_CACHABLE_OFFICE_LINK S_KB843286 for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click the subkey that you created in step 6, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  9. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 00000001, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • After you receive the "Page cannot be displayed" error message, click Refresh in Internet Explorer to view the Office document.
  • In Internet Explorer, turn off the Show friendly HTTP error messages option. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    2. In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    3. On the Advanced tab, click to clear the Show friendly HTTP error messages check box, and then click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
