Event ID 4000 is generated every five minutes on a DNS server that is running Windows 2000 Server (884499)

SYMPTOMSIn the DNS server event log of a Domain Name System (DNS) server that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, the following event may appear every five minutes: Event ID: 4000

The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory. This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and reload the zone.
CAUSEThis issue may occur if the DNS server address that is specified in the TCP/IP protocol settings of the DNS server is not correct. If you have two network adapters with more than one IP address configured on your computer, you can use the first IP address of only one of the network adapters to configure the DNS server address. You cannot configure the DNS server address on both the network adapters. RESOLUTIONTo resolve this issue, follow these steps: - Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
- Right-click the DNS server that you want to modify, and then click Properties.
- In the Interfaces tab, click Only the following IP addresses.
- In the IP address box, type the first IP address of one of the network adapters to set it as the DNS server address, and then click Add.
- Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
- On the Console menu, click Exit.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- In Control Panel, double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.
- Right-click the local area connection for the IP address that you specified in step 4, and then click Properties.
- In the Components checked are used by this connection list, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
- In the Preferred DNS server box, type the IP address that you specified in step 4, and then click OK.
- Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.
- Close Network and Dial-up Connections.
